Iowa Warns Consumers About Cash Advance Interest Rates
Posted on Monday, October 17th, 2019 at 1:34 pm in State Loan Info
Iowa’s Attorney General warned consumers about high cash advance interest rates in the state and reminded them to make responsible financial decisions. Iowa doesn’t have very strict interest rate caps, so the annual percentage rate for a small cash loan can get pretty high.
The Attorney General compared Iowa cash advance interest rates to the annual interest rates on a credit card, stating that even the most expensive credit card only has an APR of 24%. A $100 cash loan, on the other hand, could have interest rates up to 400% or higher, depending on the lender’s fees.
The Attorney General’s statement took into account situations when consumers might be desperate for money and turn to cash advances for quick financial relief. He didn’t discourage consumers from borrowing cash advances, but did encourage them to make responsible decisions with their money. Consumers should stay aware of fees associated with their cash loans to make sure they can afford the loans they borrow.
He also addressed online payday loans, which are legal in Iowa, but only if the online lender is licensed in the state. Plenty of online payday lenders are licensed in the states where they lend, but many other payday lenders don’t bother getting licensed in more than one state. If you’re borrowing online cash advances in Iowa, make sure your lender is also licensed in the state of Iowa. Otherwise, the loan would be illegal, and you would not be protected against any predatory interest rates an out-of-state online lender might charge.
If you’re borrowing cash advances in Iowa – or in any state, for that matter – take the Attorney General’s advice and be responsible with your money. Always factor in the interest rate into the amount you borrow to ensure that you can afford your cash loan. Borrow responsibly to avoid future financial problems.
